Boston Review: Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey presents Zing Zang Zoom!

When someone does a trick, I am one of those persons who will try to call them out on how it’s done.

There’s a trap door underneath!  They were hiding behind the curtain!

Wait a second, wait a second, it’s joined in the middle and there’s a spring around it, it pops it open when it’s inside the tube.

OK, fine. I may not be the quintessential Gambini, or Alakazam’s worst nightmare for that matter; but I like to think I can rationalize how a trick is done.

Last night the family and I went to see the Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey presentation of Zing Zang Zoom!

I have to admit, they’ve got me beat.  We saw some amazing, “Do Not Try This At Home!” tricks, and I have no clue how they pulled them off.  For the kids it was true magic. For me as an adult, it was confounded awe.

We cheered along as Zingmaster Alex and his assistant Levitytia used their magic to keep their performers soaring above the crowds, despite Mr. Gravity’s attempts to keep everyone down.

Mr. Gravity was actually very entertaining and kept my son rolling in hysterical giggles with his antics.

We saw some of our favorite animals, of course.  The Asian elephants were beautiful, intelligent, and simply amazing creatures.

The horses were majestic; the tigers fierce, yet playful.

Skillful performers scaled tight ropes and flipped through the air on the trapeze.  Other performers wrapped themselves in swaths of long cloth and twirled through the air.  My children stared up above, wide eyed with amazement.

What was my favorite part?  It had to be watching two performers shot simultaneously out of cannons at 65 miles per hour.  They soared and flipped through the air before landing safely on an enormous stunt cushion. Upon watching that, my kids said (in their best unintentional Keanu imitation) “Whoa.”

Oh, and one must not forget the dude who went through the ring of fire.

There is truly nothing like the circus; it is a fantastic family show that children and adults will enjoy.  There is a reason it is called The Greatest Show on Earth!

Every time we go there’s a small part of me that wants to grasp onto that life and imagine myself traveling with a company of fellows; twirling in the rafters of arenas throughout the country night after night.

Actually, I’m exhausted just thinking about that. And I’m a terrible gymnast.  But while we were there for that two hour window of time, I was up there with them and it was thrilling.

Don’t miss this performance! The show will take the stage all week in Boston at the TD Garden.  For information on show times and how to purchase discounted tickets via Ticketmaster, click here.
